Do you buy or sell hardwoods? Unlike dimensional lumber, hardwood is often bought and sold by the board foot. One board foot is equal to 144 in3 or a 1" thick board 12" long by 12" wide. Pricing is determined by calculating the volume of the board in in3 and then dividing by 144. The total invoice will often contain other charges such as machining (planing and jointing) charges. The quoted volume received must be accurate. As hardwoods are often very expensive ranging from several dollars per board foot up to several hundred dollars per board foot, it is in your best interest to ensure that the volumes are calculated correctly.
